(b. 1910)
   English prima ballerina. Starting with the Diaghilev company at the age of fourteen, London-born Alicia Markova became one of the most accomplished classical ballerinas in the world. She appeared with many leading ballet companies and in 1933 founded her own, together with Anton Dolin. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1963. That year she accepted the post of director of the Metropolitan Ballet in New York, and in 1970 became Professor of Ballet at the University of Cincinnati.
