Mayer, Daniel

Mayer, Daniel
(b. 1909)
French politician. In French political life after World War II, Mayer came to the fore as secretary-general of the Socialist Party, which he had secretly kept alive during the war years. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies from 1946–58, and held several Cabinet posts, including minister of labour. After 1958, he played a leading role in the European human rights field, as president of the League for the Rights of Man. He was identified with Jewish causes and became a focus for pro-Israel sentiment in France, especially after the Six-Day War of 1967, when official policy turned the other way.
