Michelson, Albert Abraham
(1852–1931)
   US physicist and Nobel laureate, 1907. Brought to the United States from East Prussia at the age of two, Michelson became an instructor in science at the US Naval Academy until 1879, and after that was a professor in physics in Cleveland and Chicago. His work on the velocity of light paved the way for Einstein’s theory of relativity. He did pioneering researches on the measurement of stars and tidal movements. In 1907 Michelson, the first American to gain the award in one of the sciences, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in optics.
