Montefiore, Claude
(1858–1938)
   British theologian and communal leader. As a member of the British Jewish aristocracy, Montefiore was educated at Balliol College Oxford and at the Hochschule in Berlin where he became a close friend of Solomon SCHECHTER. Montefiore was the founder of the radical Jewish Religious Movement in 1902 which was the forerunner of the British Jewish Liberal Movement. Together with Lilian MONTAGU and others, he was a founding member of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St John’s Wood and was President of the Anglo-Jewish Association from 1895–1921. A determined anti- Zionist, he tried to prevent the signing of the BALFOUR Declaration in 1917. He also produced various scholarly volumes on the New Testament and together with Herbert Loewe, he compiled the well-known Rabbinic Anthology (1938).
