Nicholas of Damascus
(b. c. 64 BC)
   Syrian writer and historian. Nicholas was born in Damascus, and became the tutor to the children of Antony and Cleopatra. On their death he was taken on as secretary to HEROD THE GREAT. He became Herod’s daily companion, his best friend and a member of the council Herod set up for secular affairs. Nicholas was a gifted man and taught Herod Greek and a sound knowledge of Hellenic culture. At Herod’s instigation, he successfully championed the cause of the Jews of Asia Minor with Emperor Agrippa. He wrote and published many books. JOSEPHUS quotes from him, but his Herodian accounts are too biased in Herod’s favour to be historically sound. He remained loyal to Herod after his death and went to Rome with Herod’s son ARCHELAUS, to gain Emperor Augustus’ confirmation of Herod’s will. Here too he was successful and seems to have remained on in Rome.
