Soviet poet and novelist and Nobel laureate, 1958. Pasternak was the son of the painter Leonid Pasternak and the pianist Rosa Kaufmann. He grew up in Moscow, where his father was a well- known portraitist and a close friend of Tolstoy. Boris’s writings show hardly any Jewish consciousness. He was a major Russian poet, and a novelist whose Dr Zhivago, smuggled out of Russia, became world famous in 1958. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the same year but was compelled to reject it owing to the resentment against him in the Soviet Union. Dr Zhivago, a story of the civil war in Russia after the 1917 revolution, revealed Pasternak as recoiling from political dogma and violence, and seeking happiness in individual fulfilment. This non-conformist outlook inevitably invited official disapproval. The book, further popularized in the West by an epic film version, remained banned in the Soviet Union.
