Peixotto Family
(19th century)
   US Sephardi family.
   Daniel Levi Madura Peixotto (1800–43), born in Amsterdam, was a noted New York physician, editor of the New York Medical Journal and a founder of the NY Academy of Medicine.
   Benjamin Franklin (1834–90), his son, a lawyer and merchant, went to Romania in 1870 as US consul, to protect the Jewish community there against pogroms and anti-Semitic laws. He occupied the post for seven years, and was subsidized by a group of influential American, British and French Jews.
   His son, George da Maduro (1859– 1937), was a noted American portrait painter and muralist.
