Phillips, Sir Lionel

Phillips, Sir Lionel
(1855–1936)
South African mining millionaire. Phillips was one of the young London Jews who went to South Africa to seek their fortune after the discovery of the Kimberley diamond mine. He played an important part in organizing the diamond industry and then in developing the Rand goldfields, though he was a less flamboyant character than Barney BARNATO or the JOEL brothers. He became president of the Johannesburg Chamber of Mines and was involved in the Jameson Raid of 1896, the abortive attempt by Cecil Rhodes to overthrow the Kruger government in the Transvaal. Phillips was condemned to death but his sentence was commuted to a heavy fine and banishment. He returned to South Africa at the end of the Boer War (1899– 1902.) and was for many years a member of the first South African Parliament after the 1910 Union. When he retired, he became a generous patron of art museums in South Africa.
