Pompey

Pompey
(Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus)
(106–48 BC)
Roman leader. When the Hasmonean brothers HYRCANUS II and ARISTOBOLUS II were struggling with each other over the succession in Judea, both of them sought the support of the Roman triumvir Pompey with costly gifts. He bided his time and then marched on Jerusalem in 63. The supporters of Hyrcanus opened the city gates to him; Aristobolus was taken captive, but his supporters held out a few months longer until the Temple was stormed. Hyrcanus was confirmed as high priest over the reduced territory of Judea. Jewish independence had in effect been ended and Roman rule established. Pompey was defeated in 48 by JULIUS CAESAR, who thereby gained control of Judea.
