American novelist. Potok was born in New York and educated at Yeshiva University, the Jewish Theological Seminary and the University of Pennsylvania. An ordained rabbi, he served as army chaplain during the Korean War. Between 1965 and 1975 he was editor of the Jewish Publication Society.
