Reik, Theodor

Reik, Theodor
(1888–1969)
Psychoanalyst. Reik had practised as a psychoanalyst in his native Vienna, in Berlin and the Hague, and was recognized as a leading European exponent, before settling in the United States in 1938. He was elected president of the National Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology in 1946.
A prolific writer, he made original contributions to different aspects of the science, including his studies on the psychology of crime, the nature of masochism, and his rejection of the established Freudian views on sex. He insisted that the relationship between analyst and patient should develop spontaneously without theoretical preconceptions and supported this opinion in a widely acclaimed book, Listening with the Third Ear (1948). He was drawn to Jewish subjects and wrote treatises on Jewish wit, pagan rites in Judaism, and biblical themes.
