Riesser, Gabriel

Riesser, Gabriel
(1806–63)
German lawyer. After having been refused a licence to practise law in his native Hamburg, Riesser led the fight for emancipation and equal rights for German Jews. He contended they were not a national entity, but Germans of the Jewish faith. The breaking down of Jewish civic disabilities was marked by his own election to the Frankfurt National Assembly (1848–9) and his appointment as a judge of the Hamburg High Court (1860).
