Rosenzweig, Franz
(1886–1929)
   German religious philosopher. Coming from a cultured and assimilated Kassel family, Rosenzweig had decided to convert to Christianity, but changed his mind under the impact of attending an Orthodox Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) service. He became absorbed in exploring the philosophical relationship between Judaism and Christianity, the theme of his major work, The Star of Redemption (Eng. tr. 1971; German original 1921). His general ideas were propounded in Hegel und der Staat (1920). In the post-war period he gathered around himself in Frankfurt an intellectual group studying Judaism, that included Martin BUBER, Gershom sc-HOLEM and others who were to become famous. Rosenzweig and Buber worked together for some years on a new translation of the Bible into German. It was completed by Buber some thirty years later.
