Roth, Cecil
(1899–1970)
   Jewish historian of Great Britain. As an historian, Oxford-educated Dr Roth combined precise scholarship with a lively lucid style and a remarkably wide cultural range. His special fields were the history of the English and Italian communities and Jewish art, including illuminated manuscripts; and he published a number of works on these subjects. He was reader in Jewish Studies at Oxford, had a visiting professorship at Bar-Ilan University in Israel and lectured at Queens College, City University in New York. He settled in Jerusalem in 1964 and from 1966 was editor in chief of the monumental sixteen-volume Encyclopaedia Judaica that appeared just after his death. His Dead Sea Scrolls (1965), a controversial contribution to the extensive literature on the subject, argued that the Qumran sect should be identified with the Zealots and not the Essenes. Roth’s best-known works are the Short History of the Jewish People (1936), The Jewish Contribution to Jewish Civilization (1938), and Jewish Art (1961).
