Roth, Philip

Roth, Philip
(b. 1933)
American writer. Roth grew up in New Jersey and is best known for his novels and short stories of American Jewish life. These include Goodbye Columbus (1959), which won a National Book Award and which introduced the Jewish American Princess as one of the great Jewish stereotypes. Equally successful was Portnoy’s Complaint (1969) which gave an equally devastating portrait of the prototype Jewish mother. Other books include Letting Go (1962), My Life as a Man (1974), The Professor of Desire (1977), The Ghostwriter (1979), Zuckerman Un-bound (1981) and The Counterlife (1990). Roth has been accused of being a self-hating Jew and he has enjoyed an ambiguous relationship with the Jewish community. Nonetheless he is generally regarded as one of the most important American novelists writing today.
