Salome

Salome
(1 century AD)
Granddaughter of HEROD THE GREAT. Salome was the daughter of Herod Beothus, a son of Herod the Great, and Herodias. Her mother’s second husband was another of Herod’s sons, ANTIPAS. According to the Gospel of Mark, Salome danced so beguilingly at a feast given by her stepfather and uncle Antipas that he promised her anything she wanted. At the instigation of her mother, Herodias, she had John the Baptist put to death for denouncing Herodias, and his severed head brought in on a platter. Salome could not have been more than fifteen at the time. JOSEPHUS states that she later married her own uncle, Philip. This macabre New Testament story was a favourite theme for paintings, poems and the stage. Oscar Wilde’s tragedy Salome (1893) was turned by Richard Strauss into the famous opera of the same name. In it, Salome is put to death after her dance.
