Salomons, Sir Julian Emanuel
(1836–1909)
   New South Wales leader. Salomons emigrated to Australia from Birmingham at the age of seventeen and settled in Sydney. A successful lawyer, he served on the Legislative Council and in the office of the solicitor-general. He was appointed chief justice in 1886, but did not take up the position because of anti-Jewish sentiment. In the 90s he was appointed agent-general of the colony in London, and played an active part in the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia that came into being in 1900. He was knighted in 1891.
