Agobard

Agobard
(779–840)
Archbishop of Lyons 814–40. Agobard was the author of the first anti-Jewish attacks of the Carolingian era. In six pamphlets he fulminated on Jewish questions, advocating the compulsory baptism of Jewish children and slaves, attacking the ‘insolence’ and ‘superstition’ of the Jews, and affirming that association with them must be avoided. In defiance of official Church policy, which had been reiterated by successive popes from the time of GREGORY I, Agobard used force to drag Jewish children to the font. His anti-Semitic agitation was continued by his successor Archbishop Amulo. They failed to influence the emperors Louis the Pious and Charles the Bald, but their castigation of the Jews as ‘the sons of darkness’ sank into the popular mind.
