Schneersohn, Menachem

Schneersohn, Menachem
(1902–94)
American communal leader. Schneersohn was born in Nikolayev, Russia, but emigrated to the United States as a young man. As a member of the Schneersohn Hasidic dynasty, he married the daughter of the sixth Lubavitcher rebbe and in 1950 became the seventh Lubavitcher rebbe and spiritual leader of the world-wide Lubavitcher organization. His headquarters on Eastern Park-way, Brooklyn has become a centre of pilgrimage and thousands of Jews have returned to Orthodox ways through his leadership. Many of his followers regarded him as the Messiah. He had no children so at his death it was unclear who would take over his position.
