Agron (Agronsky), Gershon
- Agron (Agronsky), Gershon
(1894–1959)
Jerusalem editor and mayor. Agron’s family migrated from the Ukraine to the United States when he was thirteen years old. He first came to Palestine during World War I as a volunteer in the Jewish Legion. In 1932, he became the founder and editor of the Palestine Post (later the Jerusalem Post), the only English-language daily newspaper in the country. It was influential as the organ of the yishuv, read by the British officials and military in Palestine and by the foreign press. Its office was blown up by saboteurs in 1947.
Agron was a sociable man with a fondness for lively talk. In the home of his wife Ethel and himself, at 4 Rashba Street, overseas visitors and correspondents mingled every Friday evening with British officials and leaders of the different local communities.
In 1949, Agron was invited to organize and direct the Israel Government Information Services, a post he held until 1951. He loved Jerusalem, and in 1955 was elected mayor of the city - a task to which he devoted himself until his death.
