Shahn, Ben
(1898–1969)
   US artist. Shahn was brought to the United States from Lithuania as a child. He became a leading American painter, muralist, li- thographer and illustrator. His work has strong overtones of left-wing politics and social satire. He often used Jewish themes - for instance, Hebrew calligraphy. The originals of his illustrations for the Passover Haggadah are now in the Jewish Museum in New York.
