Shamir, Yitzhak
(b. 1915)
   Israeli politician. Shamir was born in Ruzimir, Poland and educated at Warsaw University and the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. He emigrated to Palestine in 1935. He was a member of the Irgun and a founder member and leader of the Stern Gang. He was arrested by the British in 1941 and exiled to Eritrea in 1946. He returned to Israel in 1948. He worked in the Israeli Civil Service (Intelligence branch) between 1955 and 1965 and in business from 1965. He became a member of the Herut movement in 1970 and was elected to the Knesset in 1973. He was Menachem BEGIN’S choice of Speaker of the Knesset from 1977 to 1980 though he initially opposed Begin’s Camp David accord. He became minister of foreign affairs 1980–3, prime minister 1983–4, deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs in the Labour- Likud coalition 1984–6 and prime minister again from 1986–92 throughout the Intifada period. His memoirs Summing Up appeared in 1992.
