Shinwell, Emanuel, Lord
(1884–1986)
   British Labour Party leader. Born into a poor London family, ‘Manny’ Shinwell was an early adherent of the British socialist movement, and worked his way up in the tough world of the Glasgow and Durham trade unions. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1922, and was one of the veteran members when he retired in 1970 and was made a life peer. A hard-hitting debater but a genial and witty man, he gained the affection even of his political foes. He held a number of important Labour Party posts, including minister of fuel and power, 1945–7, secretary of state for defence, 1950–1, and chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party, 1964–7.
