Silkin Family
(20th century)
   British lawyers and politicians. Lewis Silkin, Lord (1889–1972), a London solicitor, was elected as a Labour member of Parliament in 1936 and served as minister of town and country planning from 1945–50, when he was raised to the peerage.
   His sons Samuel (1918–88) and John (1923–87) were also lawyers and Labour members of Parliament. In the Wilson government of 1964–70, John Silkin served as chief whip and as minister of public building and works.
