Silverman, Samuel Sydney
(1895–1968)
   British socialist. A lawyer born in Liverpool, Silverman was elected to the House of Commons as a left-wing Labour member in 1935. He retained his seat until his death, thirty-three years later, and was one of the most respected and popular figures in the House. He was known as a skilled and fearless debater and was twice suspended by his party for taking an independent line. A committed Zionist, he was an outspoken critic of the Palestine policy of Ernest BEVIN in the Labour government of 1945–50. He was a vice-president of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and chairman of the British section of the World Jewish Congress.
