(1891–1972)
US biblical archaeologist. The son of a US Methodist minister, Albright became the doyen of modern biblical archaeologists and a father figure to a whole generation of younger American and Israel scholars in this field. He was professor at his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, from 1929, and director of the American School of Oriental Research for two periods, 1920–9 and 1933–6. He carried out a number of excavations in the Middle East, and his influence became decisive on questions of biblical chronology and the dating of pottery. A prolific writer, he produced a number of major works and some fifteen hundred scientific articles. Among his best-known publications are From the Stone Age to Christianity (1940), Archaeology and the Religion of Israel (1942), and New Horizons in Biblical Research (1966).
