Spire, André
(1868–1966)
   French poet and Zionist. The son of an old and assimilated Lorraine family, Spire was inspector-general of the French Agricultural Ministry (1902–26). The DREYFUS Affair made him an ardent Jewish nationalist, and he fought a duel against the anti-Semitic leader Drumont. He was a French member of the Zionist delegation to the Paris Peace Conference. His Jewish feelings strongly influenced his poetry, short stories and critical essays.
