Sprinzak, Joseph
(1885–1959)
   First Knesset speaker. Sprinzak was a leading figure in the Second Aliyah, arriving from Russia in 1908. He was one of the founders of the Histadrut (the Israel labour union) and became its secretary- general in the 1940s. He was involved in building the framework of the yishuv’s democratic institutions: the Elected Assembly and National Council (Va’ad Leumi). After the proclamation of the State of Israel in 1948, he served as first speaker of the Knesset (Israel parliament). Under his aegis the Knesset developed forms and procedures derived mainly from the British parliamentary model.
