Stampfer, Yehoshua

Stampfer, Yehoshua
(1852–1908)
Palestine pioneer. Stampfer was an extremely Orthodox Jew who went to Palestine in 1869, roused by the example of nationalism in his native Hungary. In 1878 he was one of the group that founded the first Jewish agricultural settlement, Petah Tikvah, and was chairman of its local council for many years (his son became Petah Tikvah’s first mayor in 1934). Stampfer’s feelings towards the Second Aliyah were ambivalent. Although glad of Jewish immigration, he was dismayed by their irreligious outlook.
