Heschel, Abraham Joshua
(1907–73)
   US scholar. A well-known German rabbinical scholar, Heschel settled in the United States in 1940 and taught at the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. He was recognized as a leading philosopher of Judaism and published a wide range of erudite works. His religious views were set out in two books, Man Is Not Alone (1951) and God in Search of Man (1956). Heschel was active in the struggle for Negro civil rights and was a friend of Dr Martin Luther King. In connection with the declaration on the Catholic Church and the Jews at Vatican II, he carried on discussions with Cardinal Bea and was received by Pope JOHN.
