Ratisbonne Brothers
(19th century)
Catholic converts. Théodore, 1802– 84, the second son of a Jewish banker in Strasbourg, had himself baptized and became a Catholic priest in Paris. His example was later followed by his younger brother, Alphonse, 1812–84, who served as a Jesuit monk in Rome, then joined Theodore. Both brothers took the first name of Marie. They founded two religious Orders, Notre Dame de Sion for women and the Fathers of Zion. In 1856 Alphonse established the Ecce Homo Convent for the Sisters of Zion in the Old City of Jerusalem.
