Rickover, Hyman George
(b. 1900)
   US naval engineer. Rickover was the son of a tailor who emigrated from Poland to the United States when the boy was six years of age. He was commissioned in the US navy and spent three years in the submarine service. Later he studied electrical engineering under the auspices of the navy, and during World War II was in charge of the electrical side of naval shipbuilding.
   When the war was over, he conceived the idea of nuclear-powered submarines and overcame much opposition before being put in charge of a project to develop them, with the aid of the Atomic Energy Commission. As a result of his work, the world’s first nuclear submarine, Nautilus, was launched in 1954– an event which was to revolutionize not only naval warfare but the global balance of power between the United States and the Soviet Union. Rickover retired from the service with the rank of vice-admiral.
