Sukenik, Eliezer Lipa
(1889–1953)
   Israel archaeologist. Sukenik, who came to Palestine from Poland in 1912, was professor of archaeology at the Hebrew University from 1938 until his death. (The chair was held later by his son, Yigael YADIN.) In 1947 he helped buy sections of the newly-discovered Dead Sea Scrolls, and devoted the rest of his life to their study. His wife, Hasya Sukenik-Feinsod (1889–1968), was a founder of the Israel kindergarten system and a leader of the Women’s Equal Rights Association.
