Wessely, Naphtali Herz (Hartwig)
(1725–1805)
   German Hebrew scholar. Wessely was one of the leading figures of the German Haskalah (enlightenment) movement, a Bible scholar associated with Moses MENDELSSOHN, and a Hebrew author, poet and philologist. His long epic poem, ‘Songs of Glory’, written between 1789 and 1802, was published in 1809.
