Wiesel, Elie
(b. 1928)
   American writer. Wiesel was born in Sighet, Romania. He was deported with his family to Auschwitz where his mother and sister died. His father died in Buchenwald. After liberation, he continued his education in France and became an American citizen in 1963. Among his many works are La Nuit (‘Night’, 1958), which is based on his experiences in the camps, Les Juifs du Silence (‘The Jews of Silence’, 1966), in which he discussed the difficulties of Soviet Jewry, Le Men-diant de Jerusalem (‘A Beggar in Jerusalem’, 1968) and Le Cinquième Fils (‘The Fifth Son’, 1983). Wiesel has gained numerous awards and in 1986 he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
