Bamberger, Simon
(1846–1926)
   US industrialist; governor of Utah 1916– 20. Born in Germany, Bamberger emigrated to the United States at the age of fourteen and joined his brothers in business in the midwest. In 1869 they settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they developed commercial interests, acquired a gold mine and built their own railroad between Salt Lake City and Ogden, Utah. Bamberger served in the state Senate 1903–7 and in 1916 was elected governor of Utah - the first non-Mormon to hold the office. His four-year term was marked by a number of progressive reforms in the public services. He was president of the local Jewish congregation and active in the project to settle Jewish families from New York and Philadelphia in an agricultural colony in Utah.
