Barany, Robert

Barany, Robert
(1876–1936)
Austrian otologist and Nobel laureate, 1914. Robert Bárány was born in Vienna and obtained his doctorate in 1900. In 1905 he was appointed lecturer in the Otological Clinic in Vienna. His investigations into the functioning of the balance apparatus of the inner ear (the labyrinth) and his formulation of operative procedures for otosclerosis gained him the Nobel Prize in 1914 but failed to obtain him a chair at the University of Vienna because he was a Jew. His systematic investigations laid the foundation of present-day knowledge of the function of the labyrinth.
In World War I he served in the Austro-Hungarian army. In 1917 he was appointed professor of otology at the University of Uppsala, Sweden. Towards the end of his life he grew interested in Palestine and he bequeathed his library to the National Library in Jerusalem.
