Bunche, Ralph
(1904–71)
   US Nobel laureate, 1950. The grandson of an American Negro slave, Bunche was the senior US official in the United Nations Secretariat. After the murder of Count BERNADOTTE in 1948, Bunche carried on as acting Palestine mediator. He presided over the negotiations that produced the 1949 Israel - Arab armistice agreements and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950.
   As UN under secretary for special political affairs from 1954 to 1967, he continued to supervise UN peace-keeping in the Middle East: the armistice machinery, United Nations Emergency Force, stationed on the Israel-Egyptian border after the Sinai Campaign, and the UN forces in Cyprus. Bunche was one of the authors of The American Dilemma (1944), a study of the Negro problem.
