Burla, Yehuda
(1886–1969)
   Israel writer. Burla, who came from an old Jerusalem Sephardi family, depicted in colourful and romantic novels and short stories the life of the Sephardi Jews in Palestine, the Middle East and the Balkans. His two major works were historical novels: Ba-Ofek (‘On the Horizon’, 1943), concerning the 19–century Serbian rabbi Judah ALKALAI; and ‘The Journeys of Judah Halevi’ (1959).
