Cardozo, Abraham Miguel

Cardozo, Abraham Miguel
(1626–1706)
Spanish physician and mystic. Cardozo was born in the town of Rio Seco into a family of Marranos. After studying medicine and Christian theology at the University of Salamanca, he went to Venice in 1640, openly proclaiming himself a Jew there, and earning his living as a physician. He left Italy in 1659, and in his wanderings became an ardent supporter of the pseudo-Messiah SHABBETAI ZEVI. In his eagerness to spread the story, he composed many books and pamphlets, and travelled to a number of communities. After his prophecy that the end of days was set for Passover 1682 turned out to be false, Cardozo was forced to leave Constantinople. The rest of his life was spent as a physician and in his continued efforts to spread Shabbeteanism. He was killed in Cairo by a nephew, in a family quarrel.
