Carvajal Family

Carvajal Family
(16th century)
Mexican family. The outstanding member of the Carvajal family, all forced to convert to Catholicism under Spanish pressure, was Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva (1539–91?). He began his adventurous career at sea and rose to be an admiral of the Spanish fleet. In 1579 he was appointed governor of the Vice-Royalty of New Spain, which stretched from Central America to beyond Panama, including Venezuela and the Philippines. Carvajal established towns and exported silver. In 1589 he was arrested by the Inquisition and died in jail.
His nephew Luis de Carvajal ‘el Mozo’ (‘the younger’; 1566–96) became a secret Jew, taught religion and wrote poetry. He was burnt at the stake together with his mother and three married sisters.
