Castel, Moshe

Castel, Moshe
(b. 1909)
Israeli artist. Castel was born in Jerusalem and received his training at the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts and the Julien Academy in Paris. In 1940 he returned to Palestine where he was determined to work in an authentically Israeli style and he became part of what was known as the New Horizons group. To this end he reinterpreted famous European paintings and concentrated on portraying religious and Israeli natural scenes. Before he returned to his native land he had painted in the contemporary Expressionist style, but subsequently he used more abstract forms. Examples of his work include a mural in the Accadia Hotel, Jerusalem, a large composition in the El Al Offices in New York and huge panels in the Knesset building in Jerusalem.
