Cerf, Bennett Alfred
(1898–1971)
   US publisher. Cerf became the founder and president of the publishing firm Random House, and remained as president when it was acquired by the Radio Corporation of America in 1967. A genial and witty man, he was one of the panelists of the celebrated television programme What’s My Line, which ran for fifteen years. He edited collections of short stories and books of jokes and anecdotes, and the Encyclopaedia of Modern American Humor (1954).
