Chain, Sir Ernest Boris

Chain, Sir Ernest Boris
(1906–79)
British biochemist and Nobel laureate, 1945. Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 prompted Chain to move from his native Germany to England, where he worked at Cambridge, and later at the School of Pathology in Oxford. For his part in the development of penicillin, Chain shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1945. Chain also discovered penicillinase, an enzyme that catalyzed the destruction of penicillin. After World War II he became professor of biochemistry at Imperial College, University of London, and was knighted in 1969. He served as a governor of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, and as a member of the executive of the World Jewish Congress.
