Cohen, Harriet
(1901–67)
British pianist. Harriet Cohen was one of the foremost virtuosos of the piano in Britain and had works especially written for her by leading composers, including one for her left hand only, after she had injured her right wrist. Active in Jewish and Zionist affairs, she had the distinction in 1934 of performing at a concert in aid of German Jewish refugee scientists together with Albert Einstein, who played the violin. She also appeared with the Palestine Symphony Orchestra before World War II, and presented a unique collection of autographed manuscripts to the National and University Library in Jerusalem. Her memoirs, A Bundle of Time (1968), were published posthumously.
