Cohen, Hermann
(1842–1918)
German philosopher. Cohen was professor of philosophy at Marburg University (1876–1912) and evolved a system of ideas based on a re-interpretation of Kant. He made an important contribution to the understanding of the Jewish religion and ethics, and vigorously defended Judaism against the anti-Semitic criticisms of the German historian Trietschke and others. Cohen, an anti-Zionist, maintained that the Jews in Germany should be fully German in all but their faith.
