Daniel, Menachem Salih
(1846–1940)
   Baghdad leader. A wealthy landowner, Daniel was elected to the Ottoman parliament in 1876 and from 1915 represented Iraq Jewry in the senate. His son Ezra succeeded to this position in the 1930s and held it until his death in 1952. In 1949–50, 125,000 Iraqi Jews were evacuated by air to Israel. Of the few thousand that remained, nearly all left the country in subsequent years. This virtually ended the great Babylonian community that had stretched back for 2,500 years.
