David ben-Zakkai

David ben-Zakkai
(10th century)
Babylonian exilarch 917–40. David is best known for his struggle with SAADIAH BEN-JOSEPH, whom David himself had appointed gaon of the famous Sura academy. The dispute started with Saadiah Gaon’s refusal to ratify a halachic (legal) decision by David’s court. It raged for two years, and split the Baghdad community. In 932 a new caliph forced Saadiah to resign from the gaonate, but four years later a reconciliation was arranged between these two strong personalities, and Saadiah was reinstated.
