Dunash ben-Labrat

Dunash ben-Labrat
(10th century)
Hebrew poet and linguist. Dunash studied in Baghdad with SAADIAH GAON and may have lived for some time in Córdoba, Spain. A rabbi and judge, he is best remembered for his conflict with Menachem ben-Jacob ibn-Saruk, the secretary of HISDAI IBN-SHAPRUT, Over Saruk’s Hebrew dictionary. Although the attack was based on religious grounds, it seems to have been a clash of personalities. Through his use of Arabic forms in Hebrew verse, Dunash was the forerunner of a new type of Hebrew poetry. His poems were praised by Solomon IBN-GABIROL, but only a few fragments of his verse are still extant.
