Eleazar ben-Ananias
(1st century)
   Zealot leader in the First Jewish Revolt. The Judean revolt against Rome that started in 66 was apparently sparked off by the priests of the Temple in Jerusalem, who refused to continue the sacrifices in honour of the emperor. According to JOSEPHUS, the Jewish historian, this act of defiance was instigated by the captain of the Temple, Eleazar, son of the High Priest Ananias.
   In the internal Jewish struggle that ensued in the city, Eleazar appeared as a leader of the militant Zealot faction, who fought against the moderates willing to come to terms with the Romans. He and his followers seized the Temple Mount and set fire to certain public buildings and records. When the war party in Jerusalem gained control, Eleazar was sent to take command in the Idumean area of southern Judea, and there is no further mention of him.
